R-Codes Volume 1 sets out the solar access requirements for single houses and grouped dwellings in WA. The reference date is the winter solstice (21 June), assessed between 9am and 3pm AWST. The R-Codes include solar access objectives for the lot being developed and for adjoining properties.
Key provisions include solar access to the habitable rooms and outdoor living areas of the proposed dwelling, and avoiding excessive overshadowing of adjoining properties. We confirm the applicable R-Code clause and Local Planning Scheme control before commencing.
R-Codes Vol 1 / LPSR-Codes Volume 2 applies to multiple dwellings, mixed-use development and other higher-density residential development in WA. Solar access requirements under Volume 2 include provisions for solar access to living areas and private open space of both the proposed and adjoining development.
